What is Ozone?
Ozone is a tri-atomic molecule which is comprised of three Oxygen atoms, best described as "activated oxygen" or "super oxygen".
Ozone was first discovered by a German scientist C.F. Schonbein in 1840 who named it after the Greek verb ozein(meaning to smell), from the peculiar odour in lightning storms.
Ozone generators were first developed in 1857. They have been improving the technology constantly and today's UV Ozone Generators are considered "state of the art."
Ozone is an unstable blue gas with a very characteristic odour that is easy to recognize, and in low levels makes the air smell fresh and its colour makes the sky blue. Ozone is an oxidizer and is the strongest known to mankind second only to fluorine. Ozone has the ability to alter, decompose and/or neutralize materials that are toxic, without creating additional toxic compounds (which is the case when using chemical compounds). After it's job is done, ozone returns to its original form of oxygen.
How does Ozone eliminate bad smells?
Organic substances, like odours, are composed of hydrocarbon molecules. Since Ozone is an unstable molecule, it attacks hydrocarbon molecules and breaks them down into harmless substances like carbon dioxide, trace amounts of water, and oxygen.
As the air passes over the UV light tubes found inside our Ozone Generator, the O2 (oxygen) is split at a molecular level. The O atom attaches itself to other O2 molecules, creating O3 (ozone). The tri-atomic molecule is formed and becomes unstable. It then searches for and attacks hydrocarbons (the bad smells) and breaks them down. Once the odour has been broken down, it does not come back unless the source that caused the odour is reintroduced.
After the elimintation of odour and the ozone gas has completed it's job, the ozone gas converts back into regular oxygen.
